Expressive, Emotional Movement

Contemporary dance is where technique meets emotion. At Dancehouse Miami, our contemporary classes blend ballet and modern technique with fluid, grounded movement that helps dancers connect deeply with the music.

Taught by experienced instructors in a positive, caring studio, our contemporary classes teach dancers to tell stories through their bodies. Dancers explore weight, breath, and dynamics while developing the artistry and control that set expressive performers apart. A strong foundation in ballet deepens every contemporary movement.

Contemporary Class FAQs

Contemporary is best suited to dancers ages 7 and up who have some foundational dance experience. Because it draws on ballet and modern technique, a little prior training helps dancers get the most from class.

Some foundational experience is recommended for contemporary, as it builds on ballet and modern technique. If your dancer is brand new, we are glad to suggest the best starting class and a path toward contemporary.

Fitted, comfortable clothing that allows free movement is recommended. Contemporary is often danced barefoot or in foot undies, and hair should be pulled back. We are happy to share specifics for your dancer’s class.

Contemporary blends the technique of ballet with the freedom of modern dance, emphasizing fluid, grounded movement and emotional expression. It is less rigid than ballet and more interpretive than jazz.

All of our classes run one hour, with time for a proper warm-up, technique, and combinations at every age and level.

The easiest way to get started is to call or text us at (305) 479-1354. We will help you find the right class for your dancer’s age and level and set up a trial class at our Miami studio.
